Gharam Yoga

"Gharam" is the Hindi word for hot. The practice is a form of hatha yoga done in a room heated to about 105° F. The heat enables your body to reach its maximum potential safely.

Instructions for Gharam yoga:

Before class please drink plenty of water throughout the day. It's also a good idea to not eat 2-3 hours before practicing gharam. The heat has the most beneficial impact on the body's systems on an empty stomach. Wear clothing that isn't binding and which allows you to move freely. Bring water, a large towel, and a yoga mat. If you do not own these things you may purchase them at the Studio.

After class it is best to slowly cool down your body. Drink plenty of water. You lose a lot of water while you sweat so it is very important to re-hydrate yourself. Drinking water will also help to flush out the lactic acid and other wastes you have worked out of your muscles.

Reasons for the heat:

A heated environment allows joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles to increase their elasticity more safely. Greater flexibility of the muscular-skeletal system decreases the chance of injury during physical activity and daily routines. Supple muscle fibers decrease hypertonicity (tense, aching muscles). The heat also helps with detoxification, aiding the body in the elimination of wastes such as uric acid and carbon dioxide, via the sweat glands. When heated, the veins and arteries dilate, allowing blood and oxygen to more easily circulate through the body. The body's systems are then able to function more effectively and efficiently. The heat increases the metabolic rate, facilitating weight loss. Sweating also improves your skin. It opens pores, cleaning out dirt and oil and leaving your skin looking healthy and fresh

Breath work and asana:

Proper breathing techniques allow for maximum oxygen intake and maximum elimination of wastes. Breathwork restores your body on a cellular level. Breath also brings a meditative quality to your practice allowing you to quiet your thoughts and connect mind to body. The asanas (postures) increase flexibility, coordination, muscle tone, and endurance, on both a physical and mental level.

*Remember: proper hydration before, during, and after class is essential.
